The Federal Highway Administration describes an Intersection as a “planned point of conflict in any roadway system.” Motor vehicles traveling at or near an intersections are crossing paths, sometimes at high rates of speed, as they travel through or turn from one route to another. Therefore, it is not surprising that over one third all car accidents occur at intersections. In the United States, over the last several years an average of 21% of the fatalities and roughly 50% of the serious injuries have been attributed to intersections.
It is not only driver error that attributes to accidents occurring at intersections. Sometimes the geometric design of an intersection or placement of traffic control devices (such as signs, markings and signals) can play a role in an intersection collision.
